DIWALI

DIWALI
Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is a major festival celebrated over five days in many parts of India by people of different faiths. It is referred to as “the festival of lights. Many Hindus observe Diwali by lighting small oil lamps known as ‘diyas’ in honor of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth prosperity, youth, beauty, and good fortune. The lamps symbolize the triumph of light over darkness and evil. It also focuses on a story from Hindu mythology about the god Krishna and his defeat of the demon god Narakasura. On this day, some people put up twinkling lights to celebrate his victory. This is linked to the ancient legend of Lord Rama, who was deprived of his kingdom and sent into exile for 14 years. Diwali celebrates Rama’s eventual defeat of the evil spirit Ravana, and his triumphant return to his home. As Irish Indians, we have celebrated Diwali through a traditional dance form, exploring different parts of Dublin. From the movie “Devaraagam” sung by KS Chitra/ Keeravani
